The Aug. 14, 2009, editorial page of the Des Moines Register was an all-out attack on our local newspaper. The letter, addressed to Editor-in-Chief Greg Pflanz, was signed by more than 40 people, many of them residents of the city. The letter, including a $500 donation to the editor-in-chief, stated: “The Des Moines Register does not deserve to exist in the same city as the paper of record, The Des Moines Register. We do not deserve to be associated with the people who wrote that editorial, published in the person of The Des Moines Register. We do not deserve to be associated with the city of Des Moines. We do not deserve to be associated with your city council.”

The Aug. 14, 2009, editorial page of the Des Moines Register was an all-out attack on our local newspaper.

For the paper to have taken so many public stands against our local newspaper and our city government, we have to wonder if there’s a bias in the paper’s editorial board.

I’m a former newspaper editor who also worked for the Des Moines Register. I know, when it comes to our local newspaper’s editorial board, we can’t be impartial.
