World No. 2 Nick Kyrgios was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat on Saturday at the US Open.

Playing his first match since breaking into the top 100 last month, the 25-year-old Serbian was defeated by a resurgent Medvedev in a match that had been billed as a meeting of two of tennis’ greats.

In a year in which he has been widely touted as among the best players in the world, Kyrgios had a shaky start to his match against Medvedev, with many commentators attributing his struggles to fatigue.

Kyrgios was struggling to produce the big serve and big forehand. He also struggled to close out games, which, while serving fairly well, was never going to be a strength of his at this level.

However, his serve-and-volley game was strong, as he did not miss a single point on his way to defeating Medvedev in just over seven hours.

Medvedev, the 16th seed, opened with a blistering 30-stroke win over American qualifier Josh Miller, before a first-set tie-break that saw his lead on the scoreboard grow from 7-4 to 14-5, and eventually take him to a 3-0 lead against Kyrgios.

However, Kyrgios rallied back and won the second set by dropping just four points. It was not enough to stay in contention, and he was defeated in a match in which he was unable to get the big serve and big forehand under control.

As he left the court, Medvedev stated that: “I was playing the best tennis of my career. I knew I had to try hard to win the match and I did everything to win the match, but it seemed like I have lost everything.”

With his next match against Stan Wawrinka set for March 8 in Monte Carlo, Medvedev now trails Kyrgios in the Open Era rankings on 172.
