Rafael Nadal overcomes Fabio Fognini in four sets in US Open second round – live!

Rafael Nadal’s win over Fabio Fognini in the first round of the 2012 US Open final saw the former world No. 1 take a record 21st Grand Slam title, his 18th at the All England Club and just his second win in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament. Former world No. 1 Nadal returns to the US for the first time since 2006 and will attempt to become the first man to win all four Grand Slam titles. Moments later, it came back to Fognini and he converted two more break points before Nadal took a break in the third and he served out the match after trailing 5-3.

“I’m not surprised at all,” Nadal said. “Even after I won the first set, I felt like I was not playing well in the first set, and in the second, I started to pull my chances back. I knew he was not going to take many chances. It was a tough match.
